We had a big one this year, and time has flown by. Since late January we have been powering through jobs, and as a result we’ve seen some great growth in the business.

Looking at what we have on the books for 2019 already, we’re going to be working on some of the biggest jobs I’ve seen – meaning we’ll be seriously looking at taking on another team member. If anyone knows of a good keen worker who’d be a great fit with the team, please send them my way.

New wheels

We’ve got a new truck – the old one was getting tired, so it was time for an upgrade. The new one is twice the size and has plenty of room for us and our lunch bags. The signwriting makes it look pretty unique too.

Work for 2018 has seen our biggest planting season for as long as we’ve been established – we’ve put over 25,000 plants in the ground and we’re still counting. Most of the plants we look after for a while afterwards as well and that has involved a bit more maintenance this year due to a productive season for growth.
We’re proud to have worked on these projects lately:

  • 10 new state houses in Ashburton
  • Many new farm shelter belts being planted in natives
  • Ray Mayne Hose and Fittings building – over 400m of hand dug garden edging and 2500m2 of lawn (the average new house lawn is 250m2)
  • Canterbury Plains Water – 6,500 plants alone
  • McDonald’s Yaldhurst
  • Plains Irrigators building
  • New gardens going in at New World Ashburton

Plus, the ongoing general maintenance and lawn laying that we have been working on too – some gardens we work on are up to 9 acres.

For those who haven’t heard – Whitney, Xanthe and I added to the family in late October with the arrival of
Declan Graham Smith
(Graham being the name of my Pop that passed away in early November and was a huge inspiration).
Declan was two and a half weeks early but a good weight at 7lb 15oz – a healthy lad who loves to eat and sleep, no complaints there. Whitney is taking to the challenge very well and Xanthe is an amazing big sister.

Boat Racing

The Dealz Racing team went pretty well in the latest Jet Boat Marathon, coming a good 3rd in their class – even with blowing up the engine.

Christmas Closure

We are planning on being all up to date and finished on Friday the 21st of December and back on the land around Monday the 7th of January to lose the holiday weight. Over this time I’m available on email for any bookings or enquiries – dale@smithscapes.co.nz .

2018 has been busy, but exciting at the same time. I’m very lucky to have Mitchell and Nathan, who always show up with a good attitude no matter what job is happening or the weather – without them I’d have nothing.

Of course, our business growth couldn’t be possible without your support as well. Thank you so much for spreading the word and being patient while we work through the list of jobs. We hope you have a great Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. See you in 2019!
